· Major Art Students participate in the Annual Bay Ridge Window Painting Contest.

 

· Art students are create sets for the annual drama production, sports night and other performances.

· Leonard Bellinger and Rosemary Ganser, instructors of Art and Computer Science, have a lesson on Astronomy on EdTech, an on-line educational journal.

 

Grade 9: Visual Perception

· This is a one year required humanities course which offers the student an opportunity to increase perception and awareness in art. The evolution of the universe, our solar system, the earth and humans will be studied.  The development of art and art movements will be illustrated and related visual assignments will be part of studio study.

Major Art I

· Drawing I - Through fundamental drawing techniques, the basics of two dimensional representation are explored (line drawing, shading, stipple, and perspective).  Careful and accurate perception of form and space is stressed as well as the unique vision and originality of each student.

· Graphics I- This course is designed to expose students to a variety of graphic media: linoleum cutting, wood cutting, color block printing and etching.  The unique qualities of each medium is stressed, as well as basic color and black and white printing techniques.

· Painting I - Beginning with color aid presentation, basic color perception will be studied.  The combined use of drawing skills, form perception, and color knowledge will introduce watercolor application and techniques.

Major Art II

· Advanced perspective drawing involving 2 and 3-point building design and drafting will be studied. In addition, the human face and figure will be a major area of study.

· Graphics II - This deals with the continuous study of printmaking, stressing quality of reproduction and originality of design.  In addition, a major part of this course deals with line, drypoint and aquatint etching.

· Painting II - In this advanced course, the student continues to explore various techniques as well as continually developing color and form perception, originality and painting style.  In addition, a basic study of important painting movements in art history is explored.

Major Art III/APArt Studio

· An advanced course designed to allow the senior art major freedom in exploring personal styles and painting techniques. Originality is strongly stressed so as to build a portfolio of quality work for college interviews and admission and will include a selection of original work and slides that satisfy areas of specialization including work in color/design, drawing, sculpture, painting, watercolor, computer graphics, mechanical drawing and contemporary concerns.

· Advanced Placement Art Studio involves solving visual problems in an intensive concentration of design and drawing assignments.

Photography

· This course is basically divided into two major areas of study:

· Photography - the basics of 35 mm cameras settings, darkroom procedures and printing techniques are addressed. Trimester III will introduce the use of digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop® applications.

· The examination and study of important photographers, cinematographers and film makers.

Astronomy

· This a trimester course in which students will be introduced to the basics of observing and understanding the night sky. The Birth of the Universe through planetary development and the evolution of life on Planet Earth will be studied.
