Putting it into practice:
· Fontbonne supports both a print yearbook and a video yearbook, as well as a newspaper. Two recent graduates have gone on to publishing success while still in college.
· Elizabeth DePasquale, a student in the first graduating class of the Honors College at Brooklyn College, published her first novel , Innocence, In a Sense, in 2005. She spoke at her commencement and shared the stage with Senator Hillary Clinton.
· Students attend performances of current plays and associated workshops. The Broadway Bonnies Club attends Broadway shows on a regular basis.
· Fontbonne Hall has an award-winning Speech Team whose students compete on local, state and national levels, including the Shakespeare Contest.
· Fontbonne’s Drama Club produces a major show each year, with students coordinating various aspects of the production.

English 9 · Stresses the development of reading, writing, speech, vocabulary and listening/note taking skills. Students are introduced to, and practice, essay writing and basic literary analysis. Elementary research methods are introduced through the study of the major literary genres. A double period writing lab makes use of multimedia instruction. English 9 H · This course is part of the MSJF Scholars program. Students are selected for this course based on their TACHS scores and 6th-8th– grade records. English 10 · Special emphasis is placed on reading comprehension and literary appreciation . This year-long course continues the development of research techniques. English 10H · For students who have demonstrated excellent language skills, analytical skills, and a love of reading. Honor grades and teacher recommendation required. English 11 · This course focuses on the various genres of American literature. Each unit features writing by American authors related to historical events covered in U.S. History. Portfolio writing continues. English 11H · In addition to the curriculum of English 11, students learn to evaluate and write literary criticism. Honor grades and teacher recommendation required. Communication for College · Similar techniques produce good writing and good speech. In this course students study methods of communicating in the most effective way possible as they prepare and present several different types of speeches and research. Every student must write a research paper. AP English Language and Composition · This course develops both writing ability and knowledge of various rhetorical modes. Students study how a writer’s choice of words, sentence length, sentence structure, and other elements affect his or her style. The student’s fluency in a variety of different writing modes will be expected. English 12 · This year-long course is divided into trimesters, each of which focuses on a different study: semester one, novels; two, short stories; and three, drama and film. Students write papers of literary analysis and discuss literary works. English 12 H · Preparation for the SAT, as well as writing the college profile and essay are essential elements of the course. This course may be taken for college credit from St. John's University. AP English Literature and Composition · Students study many representative works of proven literary worth from several genres and periods. In addition, they concentrate on concise and effective use of language in their written assignments. Film as Art · This senior elective examines films from a number of important aspects: film genres; history of film; representation of groups in film; differences from other media; technical aspects such as editing, lighting, etc.
