Women of faith and vision ... building tomorrow TODAY!

World Languages Curriculum

We believe that it is important to motivate each woman to embrace responsibility for her own learning.

From our belief statements:

Putting it into practice:

· A podcasting program for language study is being developed by a student and faculty team.

· Students in the ICT program are cooperating with other students here and abroad in the study of the effects of Global Warming on Spanish-speaking countries. Fontbonne faculty members in the Science, World Language and  Computer Science Departments have received a grant for this program.

· Students in Sophomore and Junior year are being prepared for the Advanced Placement examinations in Italian and Spanish.

· Students on all level of Latin language study take the competitive National Latin Examination in March.

·  Students may take the fourth year of language study for St. John’s University credit.

· Students who excel in their World Language studies in the first year are invited by the department to participate in the accelerated language program which allows students to complete five years of study in four years and earn both SJU and AP credit.

· Nineteen Fontbonne students participated in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad  (NACLO) in February.  Fontbonne was one of only three high school sites in Brooklyn and Queens. Want to try?

Level I: Spanish, Italian

· Level I of a language is designed to give the beginning student pronunciation, grammar, syntax, and listening comprehension in the target language.  A basic cultural awareness of the target language is inaugurated.

Level II: Spanish, Italian

· Reading, writing, and conversational skills are further developed through the use of brief stories and compositions and assigned topics concerned with everyday situations. Verbal conjugation is expanded to include the descriptive past. Cultural awareness is continued.

Level III: Spanish, Italian

· Students practice comprehension for information as well as pleasure, engage in impromptu conversation using listening and speaking skills, and create original written expression in the form of compositions. Cultural study is continued in a multi-media approach.

Level III A: Spanish, Italian

· This is an accelerated course that covers topics in Levels II and III in preparation for the NYS Regents that students will take in June. The course offers more complex grammatical and conversational patterns. Students will practice more advanced listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Pronunciation drills will be stressed.

Level IV A: Spanish, Italian

· Students will further strengthen their foundation in grammar and syntax. Readings, conversations and written assignments will be based on some of the major Italian authors. Students will use appropriate vocabulary and learn ways to address different audiences. The successful completion of the course will lead students into the AP examination in their senior year.

Level IV: Spanish, Italian—Advanced                  Conversation and Culture

· This course is an advanced conversation and composition course designed for students who wish to perfect their language skills. Readings, conversations and written assignments will be based on the works of several major authors. Students will be prepared for the CLEP examination.

Latin I

· This course will introduce the basic grammatical structures of the Latin. Emphasis will be placed upon improving student language skills in English. Students will be introduced to Greek and Roman mythology, and will be provided with an historical background of Roman culture.
