Text Box: Our Mission:

To create an enthusiasm for scholarship, a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students at Fontbonne Hall.

	Service Committee

National Honor Society members volunteer their time with several charities and organizations. Each member is required to fulfill twenty five hours of community service each year as well as participate in chapter events. Just this year, the National Honor Society has collected household items for several families in need, run a Toys for Tots drive, and participated in the Jingle Bell Walk for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Tutoring

The tutoring committee of the National Honor Society helps fellow Fontbonne students that are failing or doing poorly in their academic classes. When a student is having trouble in any of their classes, a National Honor Society member is designated to help them and to tutor them in that subject. They meet twice during the school week and work together to ensure the student understands the subject.

Web Design

The web design committee of the National Honor Society updates the website with recent information about the chapter, such as service events and new inductions.

Induction

The induction committee is in charge of setting up for the induction of new members into the National Honor Society.

Service Projects

Since 1994 staff and teachers of the Brentwood Public School District have volunteered their time to The CSJ Learning Connection for Adult Education, an ESL literacy program serving immigrant women living in the Brentwood area. The program has taught over two thousand women to learn English, read, write, solve basic math problems, use computers, and prepare for the High School Equivalency Exam (GED) and college or vocational training. On October 25th, The Learning Connection held a celebration for its fifteen years of service to the Brentwood community. The festivities included raffles and “theme gift basket” prizes. As a sponsored school of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Fontbonne Hall Academy’s Chapter of the National Honor Society provided some of these gift baskets. NHS’ President Victoria Silva and Vice-President Elena DeSantis coordinated a meeting for the Bonnies to prepare baskets of cold weather accessories, laundry necessities, personal care items, and items for family entertainment. Sister Dolores and the staff of The Learning Connection were very grateful for the time and effort the girls put in to help this mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

National Honor Society Criteria:

Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for membership are expected to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character, and to maintain these after induction into this society. Students may not apply for membership but are selected after meeting the following criteria:

1. An overall minimum career GPA of 93%.

2. Passing Regents Examination grades in all courses ending in a Regents Exam

3. Previous and current active membership in two school clubs/activities - one of which is school service oriented. If Sancus is a club choice, a minimum of ten (10) hours is required for consideration.

4. Active, on-going, involvement in a community service organization for a minimum of one (1) year prior to induction. This may include parish or local community concerns. In addition to the required fifteen (15) hours of service per year, each NHS candidate must have an additional ten (10) hours of service per year.
