Women of faith and vision ... building tomorrow TODAY!

Text Box: Science Curriculum

We believe that it is important to motivate each woman to embrace responsibility for her own learning.

From our belief statements:

Putting it into practice:

· All science course have an associated laboratory component.

· Fontbonne Hall students have been accepted into the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education and other prestigious programs.

· Science students do field work at local beaches and museums.

· Forensics students visit the Bodies exhibit, and work with simulated evidence collection and crime scenes.

· The Forensics course was awarded a grant from the Toshiba America foundation for a comparison microscope.

· The Science Club is working in conjunction with the Student Activities Council to turn Fontbonne into a green school.

All courses are 1 credit.

To earn the NYS Regents Diploma, students must earn 3 science credits and pass one Regents Examination.

To earn the NYS Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, students must earn 3 science credits and pass the Living Environment Regents and one other Regents Examination in science.

Students will be assigned and pre-registered for science courses at the discretion of the Science Department based upon grades at the time of registration. Assignments may change in June based on final course grades and June Regents grades.

The Living Environment                  Grade 9

· This course concentrates on the Living Environment curriculum which examines the interaction of species and environments at the ecological level and the study of Modern Genetics. Scientific inquiry and laboratory experiences are central to this course.

Biology Honors                   Grade 9

· This course approaches the curriculum at a more advanced level, preparing students for both the Living Environment Regents and the SAT Subject Test (SAT II) in Biology.

The Physical Setting: Chemistry    Grades 10,11

· Chemistry is the quantitative and qualitative study of matter and energy.  Included is an overview of kinetics, atomic theory, organic chemistry and modern applications.  This course follows the NYS Regents syllabus and incorporates required laboratory exercises.

Chemistry Honors                             Grade 10

· This advanced chemistry course focuses on the quantitative and qualitative study of matter and energy. Included is an in-depth study of kinetics, atomic theory, organic chemistry, and modern applications. In addition to taking the NYS Regents Examination, students are encouraged to take the SAT Subject Test (SAT II) in Chemistry.

Prerequisite: Strong math skills and departmental approval.

The Physical Setting: Physics      Grades 10, 11

· This course presents a modern view of physics with concentration on fundamental theories and laboratory investigation.  The Physics program covers the following areas: Mechanics, Wave Phenomena, Electricity-Magnetism, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Nuclear Physics. This course follows the NYS Syllabus and allows for Regents credit through the Regents examination and required laboratory exercises. Recommended for students with strong mathematics and problem-solving skills.

Prerequisites: Chemistry Regents and Departmental Approval.

Physics Honors                                    Grade 11

· An in-depth study of physics as described above. Mastery of mathematical applications is required. In addition to taking the NYS Regents Examination, students are encouraged to take the SAT Subject Test (SAT II) in Physics.

Prerequisites: Strong math skills, Chemistry Regents and Departmental Approval.

The Physical Setting: Earth Science Grades 10-12

· This course presents the New York State Regents curriculum with concentration on processes of change, the earth model, the earth's energy budget, the rock cycle and history of the earth.  Included are laboratory exercises which  emphasize the use of instruments and the interpretation of data. Not available to students who have taken the NYS Earth Science Regents Examination.

Prerequisite: Grade 10, Departmental Approval.

Marine Science                                    Grade 11, 12

· Marine Biology and oceanography make up the body of knowledge known as Marine Science. The course explores the physical and biological characteristics of the ocean. This study includes areas of chemistry, physics and geology. Challenging and creative labs will connect your scientific ideas with course topics. Dissection is an integral part of lab portion.

Prerequisite: Departmental Approval.

Intro to Anatomy and Physiology  Grade  11, 12

· This course is designed for students interested in the fields of nursing, physical therapy, physicians’ assistant, sports medicine, occupational therapy and related disciplines. This course includes the study of the functions of systems of the human body. In addition, a laboratory component that focuses  on learning common medical/nursing terminology and the study of diseases is required. This course may be taken for college credit from St. John’s University.

Prerequisites: Departmental Approval. Passing of all NYS Science Regents Exams.

Advanced Placement Biology         Grade 12

· The equivalent of a required first-year college Biology course with a curriculum set by the College Board, includes cell chemistry, bioenergetics, plant and animal physiology, cell structure and reproduction, and modern genetics. Included are mandatory laboratory units.

Prerequisites: Strong comprehensive science background. Departmental Approval. Passing of Living Environment, Chemistry, and Physics  Regents Exams.

Forensics                              Grade 12

· Forensics is the integration of science and the law. Students will learn to incorporate scientific and laboratory techniques to solve simulated legal problems. Laboratory included.

Prerequisite: Departmental Approval. Preference given to students who took Chemistry in Junior year.

MIT Genetics                   Grade 12

· Incorporates MIT Open Courseware and other resources for a college-level study of Genetics from gene structure to cancer.

Prerequisite: This multimedia course requires completion of AP Biology and Departmental Approval.
