Performing Arts

Our Drama elective introduces each student to the basic techniques of acting, while also enabling them to build their self-confidence, enhance their presentation skills, collaborate with fellow actors and stagehands, and maybe even discover hidden talents.

At Fontbonne Hall in Brooklyn, we also facilitate an after school Drama program that is specially designed for the most passionate and motivated young artists, and this includes studies in acting, voice, singing and dance.

Students of all high school grade levels are welcome to participate and audition for the Spring Musical.

NYC High School for Drama

The Music Department at FH offers a plethora of high caliber vocal and instrumental ensembles as well as courses in Music Appreciation and Keyboard Studies.

For the vocal ensembles, Concert Chorus and Chamber Choir, the main focus is placed on vocal development, music comprehension, and the study of varied choral repertoire. Students perform at concerts, community events, and school liturgies.  This past year the choirs performed at Carnegie Hall and various other community events.  Students will sing with proper technique, diction, expression, and will have an artistic understanding of the music performed.

Students interested in instrumental music also have the option of joining The Bonnie Beats (drum line) and The Tusks (rock band) as a co-curricular club.  Both ensembles perform at school and community events.

Music Appreciation is offered to all incoming freshmen and the course studies the major musical time periods, music theory, and music production. Students will engage in varied activities including listening and analyzing music, producing and composing music, studying the elements of music, comparing musical genres and time periods, and more.

Students will explore the acoustics of sound through instrument-making and will develop an awareness and appreciation of music through project-based learning.

Students can also register for Introduction to Keyboard, in this course students will learn the fundamentals of keyboard. The course will increase musical understanding beyond just reading notes by teaching students a vocabulary of chords and keys, accompaniment patterns, and improvisational techniques. Students will play melodies in several positions and have the opportunity to participate in ensemble playing. Students will develop good practice habits and learn techniques to increase the muscular agility and flexibility of their hands.

Students will perform in various school events and will perform a solo piece in the spring piano recital as the culminating final of the course.  All of the ensembles and courses of study in the FHA Music Department aim for students to foster a love of music and gain real world performance experience.
